Introduction & Objectives of Project:
IT @ SCHOOL is the project of the General Education department, Government of Kerala to introduce IT enabled teaching and learning in over 2600 high schools of the State. The project commenced its operation during the year 2002-03 with the introduction of IT in standard VIII (High school level). Now the project is pipe lined to be introduced in Higher Secondary and Upper Primary level (Piloting already completed in UP sector). The project aims to integrate information technology into the mainstream curriculum of the high schools and higher secondary schools with a view to enhance the intellectual productivity of teachers, to improve students’ learning capabilities and to increase the management efficiency of school administrators. The objectives and vision of the project can be briefed as follows:
• To introduce IT enabled education effectively in School Sector thereby making about 30 lakhs of students make use of IT as an effective tool in teaching – learning process.
• To develop a specific model to satisfy the IT curriculum requirement in educational sector as envisaged in Kerala Curricular frame work (KCF 2007).
• To lay foundation from school level for the implementation of IT enabled education.
• To study the effectiveness of IT enabled education in the achievement of the students in various subjects like science, maths, social studies etc.
• To equip all the school technologically enriched and school community as techno savvy.
• To empower teachers to handle all subjects using ICT tools
• To develop content tailor made for curriculum requirement
• To organize and develop ICT and e-initiative through conduct of IT Mela and other such activities.
• E-governance initiatives with in the General Education Department.
• Nodal agency for implementation of EDUSAT network in the state. Currently runs 2 exclusive channel for educational purpose –
1. Non interactive ViCTERS channel (Virtual classroom technology on EDUSAT for rural schools) which is currently available through local cable network
2. Interactive channel for video conferencing and distant education purpose
